It was founded in 1922 by Major General Sir Robert Lockhart, K.C.S.I., K.C.V.O., K.C.I.E., C.B.E., D.S.O., as a feeder institution to the Indian Military Academy. The college is affiliated to the CBSE and follows the 10+2 pattern of education. It is run and managed by the Indian Army and provides free education, accommodation, and food to all the cadets.
